How to Get Natural, Candid Engagement Photos

You know those engagement photos you see and immediately think, “I want photos like THAT.” The ones that feel natural, playful, romantic, and full of real emotion?

The secret usually isn’t knowing how to pose. It’s having someone behind the camera who knows how to bring those genuine reactions out of you and give you those natural looking engagement photos.

You Don’t Have to Know How to Pose

One of the biggest things I hear from couples before their engagement session is, “We’re awkward in front of the camera,” or “We have no idea what to do.”

And honestly? That’s completely normal.

You don’t need to show up knowing how to pose or where to put your hands. That’s my job!

Instead of standing you in one spot and saying, “Okay, smile!” I’ll guide you through poses and prompts that give you something to actually do together that will create those natural engagement photos.

Prompts Create Real Reactions and Natural Looking Engagement Photos

If I want you to laugh, I don’t always just tell you to laugh. I’ll give you something that might actually make you laugh.

Maybe I’ll have you whisper something ridiculous into your person’s ear. Maybe you’ll tell them a funny story, run toward each other, dance for a few seconds, or just slow down and talk.

Those little prompts create movement and interaction, which naturally brings out the smiles, laughs, looks, and little moments that make your photos feel like you.

The Best Photos Are Usually the In-Between Moments

Some of my favorite images from an engagement session aren’t the perfectly posed ones. They’re the photos taken right after the pose when you’re laughing, looking at each other, fixing your partner’s hair, or walking together without thinking about the camera.

Those are the moments I’m always looking for.

I want you to look back at your engagement photos and remember how it actually felt to be together, not just what you looked like standing in front of a camera.

Just Show Up and Be Yourselves

You might feel a little awkward for the first few minutes, and that’s okay! Almost everyone does.

As we keep moving, I will give you different prompts, you’ll start to loosen up and forget that you’re even being photographed.

You just show up, be yourselves, have fun with your favorite person, and let me guide you through the rest.

Because at the end of the day, the best engagement photos aren’t the ones where you looked the most “perfect.”

They’re the ones where you can see your relationship, the laughs, the little looks, the way you naturally love each other, and all those in-between moments that make your story yours.
