As a Minnesota engagement photographer (and Detroit Lakes wedding photographer), one of the most common things my couples tell me is, “We’re so awkward in front of the camera!”, and I promise, you’re not alone.
The truth is, you don’t need to be models or know how to pose perfectly. The best photos come from real moments, laughter, connection, and just being yourselves. Here are my top tips to help you look natural, feel comfortable, and genuinely enjoy your engagement session.
1. Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera
When you focus on your partner instead of the camera, everything shifts. Talk, laugh, hold hands, whisper something silly; those in-between moments are where the magic happens. During your session, I’ll guide you through prompts that help you connect so your photos look relaxed and effortless.
2. Choose Outfits That Feel Like You
One of the biggest keys to looking natural is wearing something that feels like you. Choose outfits that are comfortable, fit well, and reflect your personalities. Neutrals, earth tones, and soft fabrics always photograph beautifully, especially against the outdoor backdrops we love here in Minnesota. Whether your session is on the lakeshore in Detroit Lakes or a cozy field in western Minnesota, comfort and confidence will always photograph best.
3. Keep Moving
Movement brings your photos to life. Walk together, dance, spin, or sneak in a playful tickle fight, anything that gets you moving helps create those candid, natural shots. I’ll gently guide you so you never feel stiff or unsure of what to do with your hands (we’ve all been there!).
4. Loosen Up and Have Fun
Your engagement session should feel like a date, not a photoshoot. Play your favorite playlist, bring your dog, or grab a drink beforehand. The more you let loose and enjoy yourselves, the more genuine and joyful your photos will be. My favorite photos always come from couples who are laughing, being playful, and soaking in the moment together.

When you trust your photographer, you can relax and just be present. As your engagement photographer, my job is to handle the lighting, posing, and all the little details that make your photos beautiful. You just get to focus on your person.
